This year, from May 13-May 15, I will be teaching multi-faceted adventure centered in the woodlands surrounding Warren Wilson College, incorporating self-discovery through writing, focusing on the five senses. Attendees will roam the many pathways that crisscross the college woodlands, pause to journal and observe, and bring home wild edibles to create delectable bites as hunger sets in. This is part of the Mountain Institute for Lifelong Learning series, and is called Writing, Foraging & Tasting the Woods. Learn more and register.

Appalachian Appetite: Recipes from the Heart of America (Séguret 2016) is a groundbreaking, influential cookbook featuring over 100 recipes that represent an innovative take on tradition, with contributions and stories from the mountain region’s best chefs, restaurants, and citizens. From Asheville to Nashville, and Mississippi to Maine, when asked which cuisine most typifies America, chefs are bound to tell you it stems from the South, the heartbeat of which is Appalachia. Appalachian Appetite is filled with recipes straight from the heart of America.

Child of the Woods: An Appalachian Odyssey (Séguret 2019) is a uniquely beautiful collection of short stories that capture the wonder of growing up in the natural settings of rural Appalachia. Author Susi Gott Séguret hails from the very depths of Appalachia in Madison County, North Carolina. More than just a collection of childhood stories, Child of the Woods is an invitation to go a-wandering, to traipse through the underbrush in search of adventure and excitement, experiencing the majesty of nature anew, through the eyes of a true child of the woods.
